I have many favorites, but here are the ones I return to again and again, due to their brain-changing beauty and brilliance and flaws:
Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus: I love how King K took the most anodyne character in comics—Jimmy Olsen—and turned his book into a launch pad for a massive cosmic head-trip for children.
Love and Rockets: I don’t like to choose between brothers, but Jaime Hernandez is one of the greatest drawers of human faces and human want on the planet.
Legion of Superheroes: 50 years of evolving comics style all packed into one massive space team. It’s the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen of the superhero esthetic.
Dungeon by Trondheim and Sfar: sexy funny animals fighting with swords, and then suddenly: heartbreaking stories of how even sexy funny animals must die.
and Lynda Barry is the funk queen of the universe.
