Bats are protected species in many states so it may be illegal to kill them. And, yeah, bat corpses in the walls are not a good idea. The only real solution is to exclude them by installing one-way mechanisms, like mesh, that let them out but don’t let them back in (Google it) and then seal up the house once they’re gone so new bats don’t come in.
